Salakee Duck is the brainchild of Kylie and Dave, two Scilly Farmers with a dream…It all started in April 2013, on our small farm on the Island of St. Marys, Isles of Scilly.

Salakee Farm is one of the oldest recorded locations on the islands and the 35 acres that we call home have been in our family for 3 generations. We’ve always wanted to undertake a special project at Salakee and after an afternoon of brainstorming we decided we really wanted to create a unique farming enterprise. After much talk we had a lightbulb moment and the idea of Salakee Duck began to form!

From there, an awful lot of researching went on and a possible funding stream was found. In September 2013 the grant was approved for the processing unit and it was all stations go to complete it by the end of the year…those 3 months were pretty crazy! With a month booked off work the containers arrived, along with the tremendous amount of help from family and friends. November was spent fitting out containers (big up dad’s the world over- they’re so handy at times!), reclaiming land to be fenced off (good work Tom and Jack) as well as enjoying the best cakes this side of the atlantic (big up mums everywhere-they know how to keep us going!).

The containers were put in place just before our labour retreated back to Devon (too knackered to carry on), but more importantly before the rain came, another 3 days and the lorry wouldn’t have made it! With December came the rain as well as a battle to make water tight the containers, the plumber and electrician worked right up until the deadline to finish the unit- and what a cracking job they did.

The New Year brought a new fuzzy bundle of adventure - well 50 fuzzy bundles in fact! Our first batch of Island reared Free Range Ducklings arrived via plane!

We are now fledging Duck Farmers and our first batch have grown…we have the next couple of batches maturing and we hope Salakee Duck will be on your menu very soon! Watch this space!
