Jobs at Salakee 2022

We are a small family farm and follow regenerative agricultural principles across all our farm enterprises. We pride ourselves on the high welfare of our animals, and the nutritious food we produce. We see our farm as a whole ecosystem and follow beyond organic principles – we don’t use any synthetic fertilisers or chemicals on our land and the management of all our animals is always working towards building top soil and soil health. This involves daily moving of cattle and poultry to a specific grazing plan, which successful applicants will be trained in. Our market garden is run on no dig principles, growing nutrient dense food whilst again building the health of our soil.

  • The position will consist of mainly working in our no dig market garden as well as working with some of the animals

  • You will be liaising or working with Dave and Kylie on a daily basis

  • As we are a multi-enterprise farm, you must be a good communicator for things to run smoothly.

  • Besides your fixed animal and garden duties, you will also be involved in many other aspects of the farm’s development and maintenance, from water systems to waste, using hand tools and using machinery. Hay making, milking and general up keep of the farm are all part of our daily jobs. You will need to be able to think on your feet, use your initiative and make effective decisions on the fly.

  • This is a role for someone physically fit and strong, you need to be able to lift heavy bags of feed, electric fencing, drag animal housing on uneven ground, and be on your feet for hours at a time on slaughter and processing days.

  • You must be happy working outside in all weather and come suitably prepared.

  • We will be doing a delivery and market once a week, it may be that you will be needed to help out with these.

  • Farming doesn’t fit the normal working week that some may be used to. Whilst we wish to sensibly limit our working hours, farming often requires responding whenever cows break out, when seedlings need watering, etc. We will rotate the weekend feeding/watering chores and you will be expected to be available for cover every 3rd weekend.

  • We provide lunch, and usually eat together taking it in turns to cook. We would love for you to join us for this

  • We are looking for someone who is good with their hands and with various tools, who are situationally aware and ready to get their hands dirty wherever needed on the farm.

Daily Schedule

We expect everyone to be focused on the farm when dealing with animals – our animals’ welfare is our primary concern, and you will be expected to be always on top of things.

The working day will be from 8-12:30/2-5

We are looking for someone to come and help us for 4 days a week from April - October. Comfortable accommodation is provided in the main farmhouse as well as food from the farm which includes veg, meat and dairy. The weekly wage will be £150.

Farm work is hard graft, but we love it. So, if you have a passion for farming and not afraid of some hard work, please get in touch.
